Do I Need SEO for My e-Commerce Website? Top 10 SEO Tips

This post is intended to help those website owners who run an e-commerce website and want to improve its ranking in search engines listings.

Let’s make it clear: you have the best web hosting that never fails; you have intuitive navigation and beautiful website design but your website doesn’t bring you the expected profit. What’s wrong with it? Perhaps, when internet users key into the search line something like “Christmas presents”, they get their top 10 websites while yours is far behind these leaders.

How can you solve this problem? We, at Plumrocket.com suggest using current SEO strategies for your e-commerce website.

What should you start with? This is what we recommend.

  1. You have a lot of photos of your products – optimize them for search engines. You can include specs, price, sales terms, shipping details and reviews when providing corresponding descriptions.
  2. Speaking of descriptions we cannot but warn you against using manufacturer product descriptions. No matter how informative/interesting/appealing they are, ALWAYS rewrite them in some way to make the description unique. If you still fail to provide unique descriptions, at least use iframes for duplicate content. The same rule works with keyword meta tags. Though they don’t affect your ranking directly, unique tags can prevent duplicate content penalties.
  3. To make your product pages rank for long tail searches create a SEO Keyword Field in the product database, and enter it every time you add new products to your website. Conversely, you should use singular keywords on a single product page.
  4. Use SEO-Friendly URLs for product and category pages. SEO-Friendly URLs contain keywords.
  5. Despite the fact that the products at an e-commerce website should be carefully grouped, avoid using too many categories and subcategories: the products should not be more than 2-3 clicks from your home page. Try to use keyword rich anchor text leading to your important pages. We have checked it. It works! 🙂
  6. Use product reviews to get user generated content. Customers’ comments will definitely result in unique content.
  7. Do not rely completely on site navigation links since they tell search engines little information about your page. Use internal contextual links to keywords rich pages.
  8. Lost for keywords? Then allow your customers to tag products with the keywords they prefer. You may be surprised but you website is likely to rank higher for slang keywords bringing more visitors to your website.
  9. Be careful with Java Script or CSS based navigation patterns since they don’t allow search engine spiders though.
  10. Make sure that your internal site search works without a hitch. After visitors came to your website, don’t disappoint them by irrelevant internal site search results.

These are the basic SEO Tips on how to improve your e-commerce website.
